Constraining hadronization mechanisms with Λc+/D0 production ratios in Pb–Pb collisions at sNN= 5.02 TeV

The production of prompt Λ c+ baryons at midrapidity (| y|< 0.5) was measured in central (0–10%) and mid-central (30–50%) Pb–Pb collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon pair s NN= 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector. The results are more precise, more differential in centrality, and reach much lower transverse momentum (p T= 1 GeV/c) with respect to previous measurements performed by the ALICE, STAR, and CMS Collaborations in nucleus–nucleus collisions, allowing for an extrapolation down to p T= 0. The p T-differential Λ c+/D 0 ratio is enhanced with respect to the pp measurement for 4< p T< 8 GeV/c by 3.7 standard deviations (σ), while the p T-integrated ratios are compatible within 1σ. The observed trend is similar to that observed in the strange sector for the Λ/K S 0 ratio. Model calculations including coalescence or statistical hadronization for charm-hadron formation are compared …

Latest research on searching for fractionally charged particles with DAMPE

The existence of fractionally charged particles (FCP) is foreseen in some extensions to the Standard Model of particle physics, and their detection would be a significant breakthrough. Most of the previous cosmic-rays (CRs) studies are mainly focused on the secondary CRs from the extensive air shower, but there is rarely on-orbit study to search FCP from primary CRs. The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) was launched into space on the 17th December 2015, and it has been working well in space for more than five years with the purpose of measuring CRs and gamma-rays, and as today a large amount of scientific data has been acquired. The FCP is assumed to be a heavy lepton, as a result, the Minimum Ionized Particles (MIPs) are selected. The Geant4 simulations toolkit is used to investigate the signal region and to evaluate selection efficiency of 2/3 FCP in DAMPE. The detailed selection methods are presented and discussed in this work.

GWTC-3: compact binary coalescences observed by LIGO and Virgo during the second part of the third observing run

The third Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog (GWTC-3) describes signals detected with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo up to the end of their third observing run. Updating the previous GWTC-2.1, we present candidate gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences during the second half of the third observing run (O3b) between 1 November 2019, 15∶ 00 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and 27 March 2020, 17∶ 00 UTC. There are 35 compact binary coalescence candidates identified by at least one of our search algorithms with a probability of astrophysical origin p astro> 0.5. Of these, 18 were previously reported as low-latency public alerts, and 17 are reported here for the first time. Based upon estimates for the component masses, our O3b candidates with p astro> 0.5 are consistent with gravitational-wave signals from binary black holes or neutron-star–black-hole binaries, and we identify …

Measurements of the groomed and ungroomed jet angularities in pp collisions at = 5.02 TeV

The jet angularities are a class of jet substructure observables which characterize the angular and momentum distribution of particles within jets. These observables are sensitive to momentum scales ranging from perturbative hard scatterings to nonperturbative fragmentation into final-state hadrons. We report measurements of several groomed and ungroomed jet angularities in pp collisions at= 5. 02 TeV with the ALICE detector. Jets are reconstructed using charged particle tracks at midrapidity (| η|< 0. 9). The anti-k T algorithm is used with jet resolution parameters R= 0. 2 and R= 0. 4 for several transverse momentum jet intervals in the 20–100 GeV/c range. Using the jet grooming algorithm Soft Drop, the sensitivity to softer, wide-angle processes, as well as the underlying event, can be reduced in a way which is well-controlled in theoretical calculations. We report the ungroomed jet angularities, λ α, and …

Constraints on the CKM angle γ from B±→ Dh±decays using D→ h±h′∓ π0 final states

A data sample collected with the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb− 1 is used to measure eleven CP violation observables in B±→ Dh±decays, where h is either a kaon or a pion. The neutral D meson decay is reconstructed in the three-body final states: K±π∓ π 0; π+ π− π 0; K+ K− π 0 and the suppressed π±K∓ π 0 combination. The mode where a large CP asymmetry is expected, B±→[π±K∓ π 0] D K±, is observed with a significance greater than seven standard deviations. The ratio of the partial width of this mode relative to that of the favoured mode, B±→[K±π∓ π 0] D K±, is R ADS (K)=(1. 27±0. 16±0. 02)× 10− 2. Evidence for a large CP asymmetry is also seen: A ADS (K)=− 0. 38±0. 12±0. 02. Constraints on the CKM angle γ are calculated from the eleven reported observables.

Analyzing the Fermi Bubbles with DArk Matter Particle Explorer

The Fermi bubbles are two large structures above and below the Galactic Plane. They are first discovered by Fermi-LAT and thought to be related to the jet or the wind from the Galactic center. The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a space-borne high energy particle telescope aiming at measuring cosmic rays and photons in a broad energy range. In this work, we use 4.8 years of DAMPE photon data to search for the emission from the Fermi Bubbles. We calculate the TS values of the lobes and the significance of its curved spectrum. The obtained spectral parameters are then compared with those from the Fermi-LAT. We also search for the emission from the cocoon in the southeast part of lobes. Since the Galactic diffuse emission (GDE) model is a major source of systematic uncertainty, we also switch to the GDE models calculated with Galprop and evaluate the influence.

Millimeter Light Curves of Sagittarius A* Observed during the 2017 Event Horizon Telescope Campaign

Several years after its initial identification (Balick & Brown 1974), the radio source at the center of our Galaxy, now associated with the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A*(Sgr A*), was discovered to be significantly variable at radio frequencies (Brown & Lo 1982). Variations of tens of percent over year-long timescales had been recognized, with convincing evidence for variability on timescales of 1 day, and factor of four variations occurring on timescales 10 days (Wright & Backer 1993). It was noted that “flickering noise” was certainly possible on shorter timescales as well (Brown & Lo 1982). After Chandra, s discovery of rapid X-ray flares from Sgr A*(Baganoff et al. 2001), however, many of the subsequent studies of its multiwavelength variability focused on impulsive events, where the flux could grow by a factor of several tens on short timescales. The first observed X-ray flare had a duration≈ 10 ks (Baganoff …
