Multiscale biomolecular simulations in the exascale era
The complexity of biological systems and processes, spanning molecular to macroscopic scales, necessitates the use of multiscale simulations to get a comprehensive understanding. Quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are crucial for capturing processes beyond the reach of classical MD simulations. The advent of exascale computing offers unprecedented opportunities for scientific exploration, not least within life sciences, where simulations are essential to unravel intricate molecular mechanisms underlying biological processes. However, leveraging the immense computational power of exascale computing requires innovative algorithms and software designs. In this context, we discuss the current status and future prospects of multiscale biomolecular simulations on exascale supercomputers with a focus on QM/MM MD. We highlight our own efforts in …

Exploring the Heat of Water Intrusion into a Metal–Organic Framework by Experiment and Simulation
Wetting of a solid by a liquid is relevant for a broad range of natural and technological processes. This process is complex and involves the generation of heat, which is still poorly understood especially in nanoconfined systems. In this article, scanning transitiometry was used to measure and evaluate the pressure-driven heat of intrusion of water into solid ZIF-8 powder within the temperature range of 278.15–343.15 K. The conditions examined included the presence and absence of atmospheric gases, basic pH conditions, solid sample origins, and temperature. Simultaneously with these experiments, molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to elucidate the changing behavior of water as it enters into ZIF-8. The results are rationalized within a temperature-dependent thermodynamic cycle. This cycle describes the temperature-dependent process of ZIF-8 filling, heating, emptying, and cooling with respect to …

Search for 10–1000 GeV Neutrinos from Gamma-Ray Bursts with IceCube
We present the results of a search for 10–1000 GeV neutrinos from 2268 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) over 8 yr of IceCube-DeepCore data. This work probes burst physics below the photosphere where electromagnetic radiation cannot escape. Neutrinos of tens of giga electronvolts are predicted in sub-photospheric collision of free-streaming neutrons with bulk-jet protons. In a first analysis, we searched for the most significant neutrino-GRB coincidence using six overlapping time windows centered on the prompt phase of each GRB. In a second analysis, we conducted a search for a group of GRBs, each individually too weak to be detectable, but potentially significant when combined. No evidence of neutrino emission is found for either analysis. The most significant neutrino coincidence is for Fermi-GBM GRB bn 140807500, with a p-value of 0.097 corrected for all trials. The binomial test used to search for a group of …

CEPC Technical Design Report--Accelerator
The Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) is a large scientific project initiated and hosted by China, fostered through extensive collaboration with international partners. The complex comprises four accelerators: a 30 GeV Linac, a 1.1 GeV Damping Ring, a Booster capable of achieving energies up to 180 GeV, and a Collider operating at varying energy modes (Z, W, H, and ttbar). The Linac and Damping Ring are situated on the surface, while the Booster and Collider are housed in a 100 km circumference underground tunnel, strategically accommodating future expansion with provisions for a Super Proton Proton Collider (SPPC). The CEPC primarily serves as a Higgs factory. In its baseline design with synchrotron radiation (SR) power of 30 MW per beam, it can achieve a luminosity of 5e34 /cm^2/s^1, resulting in an integrated luminosity of 13 /ab for two interaction points over a decade, producing 2.6 million Higgs bosons. Increasing the SR power to 50 MW per beam expands the CEPC's capability to generate 4.3 million Higgs bosons, facilitating precise measurements of Higgs coupling at sub-percent levels, exceeding the precision expected from the HL-LHC by an order of magnitude. This Technical Design Report (TDR) follows the Preliminary Conceptual Design Report (Pre-CDR, 2015) and the Conceptual Design Report (CDR, 2018), comprehensively detailing the machine's layout and performance, physical design and analysis, technical systems design, R&D and prototyping efforts, and associated civil engineering aspects. Additionally, it includes a cost estimate and a preliminary construction timeline, establishing a framework for …

Measurement of production in collisions at TeV at LHCb
A study of prompt Ξ c+ production in proton-lead collisions is performed with the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 8.16 TeV in 2016 in p Pb and Pb p collisions with an estimated integrated luminosity of approximately 12.5 and 17.4 nb− 1, respectively. The Ξ c+ production cross section, as well as the Ξ c+ to Λ c+ production cross-section ratio, are measured as a function of the transverse momentum and rapidity and compared to the latest theory predictions. The forward-backward asymmetry is also measured as a function of the Ξ c+ transverse momentum. The results provide strong constraints on theoretical calculation and are a unique input for hadronization studies in different collision systems.

Tuning Wetting–Dewetting Thermomechanical Energy for Hydrophobic Nanopores via Preferential Intrusion
Heat and the work of compression/decompression are among the basic properties of thermodynamic systems. Being relevant to many industrial and natural processes, this thermomechanical energy is challenging to tune due to fundamental boundaries for simple fluids. Here via direct experimental and atomistic observations, we demonstrate, for fluids consisting of nanoporous material and a liquid, one can overcome these limitations and noticeably affect both thermal and mechanical energies of compression/decompression exploiting preferential intrusion of water from aqueous solutions into subnanometer pores. We hypothesize that this effect is due to the enthalpy of dilution manifesting itself as the aqueous solution concentrates upon the preferential intrusion of pure water into pores. We suggest this genuinely subnanoscale phenomenon can be potentially a strategy for controlling the thermomechanical energy …

Using the baryon as a benchmark, the method is demonstrated with simulated events and proton-proton collision data at TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb collected with the LHCb detector in 2018. Significant improvements in the angular resolution and the signal purity are obtained. The method is implemented as part of the LHCb Run 3 event trigger in a set of requirements to select detached hyperons. This is the first demonstration of the applicability of this approach at the LHC, and the first to show its scaling with instantaneous luminosity.

Acceptance Tests of more than 10 000 Photomultiplier Tubes for the multi-PMT Digital Optical Modules of the IceCube Upgrade
More than 10,000 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) with a diameter of 80 mm will be installed in multi-PMT Digital Optical Modules (mDOMs) of the IceCube Upgrade. These have been tested and pre-calibrated at two sites. A throughput of more than 1000 PMTs per week with both sites was achieved with a modular design of the testing facilities and highly automated testing procedures. The testing facilities can easily be adapted to other PMTs, such that they can, e.g., be re-used for testing the PMTs for IceCube-Gen2. Single photoelectron response, high voltage dependence, time resolution, prepulse, late pulse, afterpulse probabilities, and dark rates were measured for each PMT. We describe the design of the testing facilities, the testing procedures, and the results of the acceptance tests.

Search for Continuous and Transient Neutrino Emission Associated with IceCube’s Highest-energy Tracks: An 11 yr Analysis
IceCube alert events are neutrinos with a moderate-to-high probability of having astrophysical origin. In this study, we analyze 11 yr of IceCube data and investigate 122 alert events and a selection of high-energy tracks detected between 2009 and the end of 2021. This high-energy event selection (alert events+ high-energy tracks) has an average probability of 0.5 of being of astrophysical origin. We search for additional continuous and transient neutrino emission within the high-energy events’ error regions. We find no evidence for significant continuous neutrino emission from any of the alert event directions. The only locally significant neutrino emission is the transient emission associated with the blazar TXS0506+ 056, with a local significance of 3σ, which confirms previous IceCube studies. When correcting for 122 test positions, the global p-value is 0.156 and compatible with the background hypothesis. We …

Improved Hole Extraction and Band Alignment via Interface Modification in Hole Transport Material‐Free Ag/Bi Double Perovskite Solar Cells
Within one decade, lead halide perovskite solar cells have reached power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) compatible with that of silicon solar cells. While in the beginning, they suffered from short device lifetimes, those have also been strongly improved over time. However, their content of toxic lead still poses a risk of environmental pollution and human health on exposure. The double perovskite (DP) Cs2AgBiBr6 offers the potential to be a lead-free alternative lightharvesting material. Herein, the fabrication of hole transport material (HTM)-free Cs2AgBiBr6-based solar cells is presented, in which the DP surface is modified via a n-butylammonium posttreatment to create a 2D/3D mixed interface. Additionally, the commonly utilized metal electrode and HTM are substituted with a carbon black back electrode (CBE) consisting of up-cycled biowaste. Through the 2D/3D interface modification, charge recombination is suppressed, and band alignment is improved at the perovskite/CBE interface. Additionally, density functional theory calculations reveal that an increasing 2D modification thickness enhances the probability for holes in Cs2AgBiBr6 to be located close to the perovskite/CBE interface, further supporting their extraction. Overall, the PCE of the HTM-free solar cells is improved through the implementation of a low-cost and end-of-waste fabrication strategy.

MiMiC: A High-Performance Framework for Multiscale Molecular Dynamics Simulations
MiMiC is a framework for performing multiscale simulations, where individual subsystems are handled at different resolutions and/or levels of theory by loosely coupled external programs. To make it highly efficient and flexible, we adopt an interoperable approach based on a multiple-program multiple-data paradigm, serving as an intermediary responsible for fast data exchange and interactions between the subsystems. The main goal of MiMiC is to avoid interfering with the underlying parallelization of the external programs, including the operability on hybrid architectures (e.g., CPU/GPU), and keep their setup and execution as close as possible to the original. At the moment, MiMiC offers an efficient implementation of electrostatic embedding QM/MM that has demonstrated unprecedented parallel scaling in simulations of large biomolecules using CPMD and GROMACS as QM and MM engines, respectively. However, as it is designed for high flexibility with general multiscale models in mind, it can be straightforwardly extended beyond QM/MM. In this article, we illustrate the software design and the features of the framework, which make it a compelling choice for multiscale simulations in the upcoming era of exascale high-performance computing.

Improved modeling of in-ice particle showers for IceCube event reconstruction
The IceCube Neutrino Observatory relies on an array of photomultiplier tubes to detect Cherenkov light produced by charged particles in the South Pole ice. IceCube data analyses depend on an in-depth characterization of the glacial ice, and on novel approaches in event reconstruction that utilize fast approximations of photoelectron yields. Here, a more accurate model is derived for event reconstruction that better captures our current knowledge of ice optical properties. When evaluated on a Monte Carlo simulation set, the median angular resolution for in-ice particle showers improves by over a factor of three compared to a reconstruction based on a simplified model of the ice. The most substantial improvement is obtained when including effects of birefringence due to the polycrystalline structure of the ice. When evaluated on data classified as particle showers in the high-energy starting events sample, a significantly improved description of the events is observed.

Differential cross-section measurements of the production of four charged leptons in association with two jets using the ATLAS detector
Differential cross-sections are measured for the production of four charged leptons in association with two jets. These measurements are sensitive to final states in which the jets are produced via the strong interaction as well as to the purely-electroweak vector boson scattering process. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by ATLAS at= 13 TeV and with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb− 1. The data are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution and are compared to state-of-the-art Monte Carlo event generator predictions. The differential cross-sections are used to search for anomalous weak-boson self-interactions that are induced by dimension-six and dimension-eight operators in Standard Model effective field theory.

Studies of new Higgs boson interactions through nonresonant HH production in the final state in pp collisions at = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
A search for nonresonant Higgs boson pair production in the final state is performed using 140 fb− 1 of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. This analysis supersedes and expands upon the previous nonresonant ATLAS results in this final state based on the same data sample. The analysis strategy is optimised to probe anomalous values not only of the Higgs (H) boson self-coupling modifier κ λ but also of the quartic HHVV (V= W, Z) coupling modifier κ 2V. No significant excess above the expected background from Standard Model processes is observed. An observed upper limit μ HH< 4.0 is set at 95% confidence level on the Higgs boson pair production cross-section normalised to its Standard Model prediction. The 95% confidence intervals for the coupling modifiers are− 1.4< κ λ< 6.9 and− 0.5< κ 2V< 2.7, assuming …

Search for pair production of squarks or gluinos decaying via sleptons or weak bosons in final states with two same-sign or three leptons with the ATLAS detector
A search for pair production of squarks or gluinos decaying via sleptons or weak bosons is reported. The search targets a final state with exactly two leptons with same-sign electric charge or at least three leptons without any charge requirement. The analysed data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb− 1 of proton-proton collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Multiple signal regions are defined, targeting several SUSY simplified models yielding the desired final states. A single control region is used to constrain the normalisation of the WZ+ jets background. No significant excess of events over the Standard Model expectation is observed. The results are interpreted in the context of several supersymmetric models featuring R-parity conservation or R-parity violation, yielding exclusion limits surpassing those from previous searches. Measurements of the production cross-section for a boson in association with - or -jets in proton-proton collisions at TeV with the ATLAS detector
This paper presents a measurement of the production cross-section of a boson in association with - or -jets, in proton-proton collisions at TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb. Inclusive and differential cross-sections are measured for events containing a boson decaying into electrons or muons and produced in association with at least one -jet, at least one -jet, or at least two -jets with transverse momentum GeV and rapidity . Predictions from several Monte Carlo generators based on next-to-leading-order matrix elements interfaced with a parton-shower simulation, with different choices of flavour schemes for initial-state partons, are compared with the measured cross-sections. The results are also compared with novel predictions, based on infrared and collinear safe jet flavour dressing algorithms. Selected -jet observables, optimized for sensitivity to intrinsic-charm, are compared with benchmark models with different intrinsic-charm fractions.

Baryonic dark forces in electron-beam fixed-target experiments
New GeV-scale dark forces coupling predominantly to quarks offer novel signatures that can be produced directly and searched for at high-luminosity colliders. We compute the photon-proton and electron-proton cross sections for producing a GeV-scale gauge boson arising from a U (1) B gauge symmetry. Our calculation relies on vector meson dominance and a phenomenological model for diffractive scattering used for vector-meson photoproduction. The parameters of our phenomenological model are fixed by performing a Markov Chain Monte Carlo fit to existing exclusive photoproduction data for ω and ϕ mesons. Our approach can be generalized to other GeV-scale dark gauge forces.

Charged-particle production as a function of the relative transverse activity classifier in pp, p–Pb, and Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC
Measurements of charged-particle production in pp, p–Pb, and Pb–Pb collisions in the toward, away, and transverse regions with the ALICE detector are discussed. These regions are defined event-by-event relative to the azimuthal direction of the charged trigger particle, which is the reconstructed particle with the largest transverse momentum in the range 8<< 15 GeV/c. The toward and away regions contain the primary and recoil jets, respectively; both regions are accompanied by the underlying event (UE). In contrast, the transverse region perpendicular to the direction of the trigger particle is dominated by the so-called UE dynamics, and includes also contributions from initial-and final-state radiation. The relative transverse activity classifier,, is used to group events according to their UE activity, where is the charged-particle multiplicity per event in the transverse region and is the mean …

Equivariant localization for AdS/CFT
We explain how equivariant localization may be applied to AdS/CFT to compute various BPS observables in gravity, such as central charges and conformal dimensions of chiral primary operators, without solving the supergravity equations. The key ingredient is that supersymmetric AdS solutions with an R-symmetry are equipped with a set of equivariantly closed forms. These may in turn be used to impose flux quantization and compute observables for supergravity solutions, using only topological information and the Berline-Vergne-Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula. We illustrate the formalism by considering AdS 5× M 6 and AdS 3× M 8 solutions of D= 11 supergravity. As well as recovering results for many classes of well-known supergravity solutions, without using any knowledge of their explicit form, we also compute central charges for which explicit supergravity solutions have not been constructed.

In models …

Measurements of inclusive and differential cross-sections of production in collisions at TeV with the ATLAS detector
Inclusive and differential cross-sections for the production of top quarks in association with a photon are measured with proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb− 1. The data were collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC during Run 2 between 2015 and 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The measurements are performed in a fiducial volume defined at parton level. Events with exactly one photon, one electron and one muon of opposite sign, and at least two jets, of which at least one is b-tagged, are selected. The fiducial cross-section is measured to be fb. Differential cross-sections as functions of several observables are compared with state-of-the-art Monte Carlo simulations and next-to-leading-order theoretical calculations. These include cross-sections as functions of photon kinematic variables, angular variables related to the photon and the leptons, and …

Spectral flow of vortex shape modes over the BPS 2-vortex moduli space
The flow of shape eigenmodes of the small fluctuation operator around BPS 2-vortex solutions is calculated, as a function of the intervortex separation 2d. For the rotationally-invariant 2-vortex, with d= 0, there are three discrete modes; the lowest is non-degenerate and the upper two are degenerate. As d increases, the degeneracy splits, with one eigenvalue increasing and entering the continuous spectrum, and the other decreasing and asymptotically coalescing with the lowest eigenvalue, where they jointly become the eigenvalue of the 1-vortex radial shape mode. The behaviour of the eigenvalues near d= 0 is clarified using a perturbative analysis, and also in light of the 2-vortex moduli space geometry.
