A search for dark matter particles is performed using events with a pair of W bosons and large missing transverse momentum. Candidate events are selected by requiring one or two leptons (ℓ= electrons or muons). The analysis is based on proton-proton collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb− 1. No significant excess over the expected standard model background is observed in the ℓνqq and 2ℓ2ν final states of the W+ W− boson pair. Limits are set on dark matter production in the context of a simplified dark Higgs model, with a dark Higgs boson mass above the W+ W− mass threshold. The dark matter phase space is probed in the mass range 100–300 GeV, extending the scope of previous searches. Current exclusion limits are improved in the range of dark Higgs masses from 160 to 250 GeV, for a dark …

The polarization of τ leptons is measured using leptonic and hadronic τ lepton decays in Z→ τ+ τ− events in proton-proton collisions at= 13 TeV recorded by CMS at the CERN LHC with an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb− 1. The measured τ− lepton polarization at the Z boson mass pole is=− 0.144±0.006 (stat)±0.014 (syst)=− 0.144±0.015, in good agreement with the measurement of the τ lepton asymmetry parameter of A τ= 0.1439±0.0043= at LEP. The τ lepton polarization depends on the ratio of the vector to axial-vector couplings of the τ leptons in the neutral current expression, and thus on the effective weak mixing angle sin 2, independently of the Z boson production mechanism. The obtained value sin 2= 0.2319±0. 0008 (stat)±0. 0018 (syst)= 0. 2319±0. 0019 is in good agreement with measurements at e+ e− colliders.

A search is reported for near-threshold structures in the Formula Presented invariant mass spectrum produced in proton-proton collisions at Formula Presented from data collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of Formula Presented. Three structures are found, and a model with quantum interference among these structures provides a good description of the data. A new structure is observed with a local significance above 5 standard deviations at a mass of Formula Presented. Another structure with even higher significance is found at a mass of Formula Presented, which is consistent with the Formula Presented resonance reported by the LHCb experiment and confirmed by the ATLAS experiment. Evidence for another new structure, with a local significance of 4.7 standard deviations, is found at a mass of Formula Presented. Results are also reported for a model without interference, which does not fit the data as well and shows mass shifts up to 150 MeV relative to the model with interference.

We search for new massive scalar particles X and Y through the resonant process X→ Y H→ b b¯ b b¯, where H is the standard model Higgs boson. Data from CERN LHC proton-proton collisions are used, collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 2016–2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb− 1. The search is performed in mass ranges of 0.9–4 TeV for X and 60–600 GeV for Y, where both Y and H are reconstructed as Lorentz-boosted single large-area jets. The results are interpreted in the context of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model and also in an extension of the standard model with two additional singlet scalar fields. The 95% confidence level upper limits for the production cross section vary between 0.1 and 150 fb depending on the X and Y masses, and represent a significant improvement over results from previous searches.

A search is reported for pairs of light Higgs bosons (H 1) produced in supersymmetric cascade decays in final states with small missing transverse momentum. A data set of LHC pp collisions collected with the CMS detector at s= 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb-1 is used. The search targets events where both H 1 bosons decay into pairs that are reconstructed as large-radius jets using substructure techniques. No evidence is found for an excess of events beyond the background expectations of the standard model (SM). Results from the search are interpreted in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric extension of the SM, where a “singlino” of small mass leads to squark and gluino cascade decays that can predominantly end in a highly Lorentz-boosted singlet-like H 1 and a singlino-like neutralino of small transverse momentum. A measurement of the jet mass distribution in hadronic decays of Lorentz-boosted top quarks is presented. The measurement is performed in the lepton+ jets channel of top quark pair production (tt) events, where the lepton is an electron or muon. The products of the hadronic top quark decay are reconstructed using a single large-radius jet with transverse momentum greater than 400 GeV. The data were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in protonproton collisions and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb− 1. The differential tt production cross section as a function of the jet mass is unfolded to the particle level and is used to extract the top quark mass. The jet mass scale is calibrated using the hadronic W boson decay within the large-radius jet. The uncertainties in the modelling of the final state radiation are reduced by studying angular correlations in the jet substructure. These developments …

A search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a charm quark-antiquark pair, H , produced in association with a leptonically decaying V (W or Z) boson is presented. The search is performed with proton-proton collisions at = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb. Novel charm jet identification and analysis methods using machine learning techniques are employed. The analysis is validated by searching for Z in VZ events, leading to its first observation at a hadron collider with a significance of 5.7 standard deviations. The observed (expected) upper limit on (VH)(H) is 0.94 (0.50) pb at 95% confidence level (CL), corresponding to 14 (7.6) times the standard model prediction. For the Higgs-charm Yukawa coupling modifier, , the observed (expected) 95% CL interval is 1.1 5.5 ( 3.4), the most stringent constraint to date.

A search for new physics in final states consisting of at least one photon, multiple jets, and large missing transverse momentum is presented, using proton-proton collision events at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb− 1, recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC from 2016 to 2018. The events are divided into mutually exclusive bins characterized by the missing transverse momentum, the number of jets, the number of b-tagged jets, and jets consistent with the presence of hadronically decaying W, Z, or Higgs bosons. The observed data are found to be consistent with the prediction from standard model processes. The results are interpreted in the context of simplified models of pair production of supersymmetric particles via strong and electroweak interactions. A generic search is presented for the associated production of a Z boson or a photon with an additional unspecified massive particle X,\({\textrm {pp}}\rightarrow {\textrm {pp}}+{{\textrm {Z}}}/\upgamma+{{\textrm {X}}}\), in proton-tagged events from proton–proton collisions at, recorded in 2017 with the CMS detector and the CMS-TOTEM precision proton spectrometer. The missing mass spectrum is analysed in the 600–1600 GeV range and a fit is performed to search for possible deviations from the background expectation. No significant excess in data with respect to the background predictions has been observed. Model-independent upper limits on the visible production cross section of\({\textrm {pp}}\rightarrow {\textrm {pp}}+{{\textrm {Z}}}/\upgamma+{{\textrm {X}}}\) are set.

This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. In summary, this …

An inclusive search for long-lived exotic particles decaying to a pair of muons is presented. The search uses data collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in proton-proton collisions at= 13 TeV in 2016 and 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 97.6 fb− 1. The experimental signature is a pair of oppositely charged muons originating from a common secondary vertex spatially separated from the pp interaction point by distances ranging from several hundred μm to several meters. The results are interpreted in the frameworks of the hidden Abelian Higgs model, in which the Higgs boson decays to a pair of long-lived dark photons Z D, and of a simplified model, in which long-lived particles are produced in decays of an exotic heavy neutral scalar boson. For the hidden Abelian Higgs model with m (Z D) greater than 20 GeV and less than half the mass of the Higgs boson, they provide the …

A measurement of the top quark pair-production cross section in the lepton + jets decay channel is presented. It is based on 4.6 fb - 1 of s = 7 TeV p p collision data collected during 2011 by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. A three-class, multidimensional event classifier based on support vector machines is used to differentiate t t ¯ events from backgrounds. The t t ¯ production cross section is found to be σ t t ¯ = 168.5 ± 0.7 ( stat ) - 5.9 + 6.2 ( syst ) - 3.2 + 3.4 ( lumi ) pb . The result is consistent with the Standard Model prediction based on QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order.

The dependence of the ratio between the B s 0 and B+ hadron production fractions, f s/f u, on the transverse momentum (p T) and rapidity of the B mesons is studied using the decay channels B s 0→ J/ψ ϕ and B+→ J/ψ K+. The analysis uses a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment in 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 61.6 fb− 1. The f s/f u ratio is observed to depend on the B p T and to be consistent with becoming asymptotically constant at large p T. No rapidity dependence is observed. The ratio of the B 0 to B+ meson production fractions, f d/f u, is also measured, for the first time in proton-proton collisions, using the B 0→ J/ψ K* 0 decay channel. The result is found to be within 1 standard deviation of unity and independent of p T and rapidity, as expected from isospin invariance.

A search for the electroweak production of a vector-like quark T′, decaying to a top quark and a Higgs boson is presented. The search is based on a sample of proton-proton collision events recorded at the LHC at= 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb− 1. This is the first T′ search that exploits the Higgs boson decay to a pair of photons. For narrow isospin singlet T′ states with masses up to 1.1 TeV, the excellent diphoton invariant mass resolution of 1–2% results in an increased sensitivity compared to previous searches based on the same production mechanism. The electroweak production of a T′ quark with mass up to 960 GeV is excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming a coupling strength κ T= 0. 25 and a relative decay width Γ/M T′< 5%.

Rare B meson decays provide a sensitive probe for beyond-thestandard-model (BSM) effects and allow exploring energy scales much higher than the ones directly accessible at the CERN LHC. A key factor in the success of these studies is the availability of precise theoretical predictions for experimentally accessible processes. The leptonic decays B0 s→ μ+ μ− and B0→ μ+ μ− represent such a case, where precise theoretical predictions can be matched with a clear experimental signature. These rare decays are examples of flavor changing neutral current processes, which are strongly suppressed in the standard model (SM), making them sensitive to BSM physics contributions. In this Letter, when decays are mentioned, charge-conjugated decay modes are implied. The B0 s→ μ+ μ− and B0→ μ+ μ− decays proceed through penguin and box diagrams that involve Z or W boson exchange and are furthermore helicity suppressed by a factor m2 μ/m2B, where mμ and mB denote the masses of the muon and either the B0 s or B0 meson. Moreover, the B0→ μ+ μ− decay is also Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa suppressed [1, 2]. As a result, in the SM, the average time-integrated branching fractions for these decays are very small [3]:

The measurements of the inclusive and differential fiducial cross sections of the Higgs boson decaying to a pair of photons are presented. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collisions data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb− 1. The inclusive fiducial cross section is measured to be fb, in agreement with the standard model expectation of 75. 4±4. 1 fb. The measurements are also performed in fiducial regions targeting different production modes and as function of several observables describing the diphoton system, the number of additional jets present in the event, and other kinematic observables. Two double differential measurements are performed. No significant deviations from the standard model expectations are observed.
