Differential cross-sections are measured for the production of four charged leptons in association with two jets. These measurements are sensitive to final states in which the jets are produced via the strong interaction as well as to the purely-electroweak vector boson scattering process. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by ATLAS at= 13 TeV and with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb− 1. The data are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution and are compared to state-of-the-art Monte Carlo event generator predictions. The differential cross-sections are used to search for anomalous weak-boson self-interactions that are induced by dimension-six and dimension-eight operators in Standard Model effective field theory.

We employ the polar re-formulation of spinor fields to see in a new light their classification into regular and singular spinors, these last also called flag-dipoles, further splitting into the sub-classes of dipoles and flagpoles: in particular, we will study the conditions under which flagpoles may be solutions of the Dirac field equations. We argue for an enlargement of the plane-wave expansion.

To reduce the model dependence, the measurement in each channel is restricted to a particle-level phase space that closely matches the channel’s detector-level kinematic selection, and it is corrected for detector effects. This paper presents a study of Z→ llγ decays with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis uses a proton–proton data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb− 1 collected at a centre-of mass energy√ s= 8 TeV. Integrated fiducial cross-sections together with normalised differential fiducial cross-sections, sensitive to the kinematics of final-state QED radiation, are obtained. The results are found to be in agreement with state of-the-art predictions for final-state QED radiation. First measurements of Z→ llγ γ decays are also reported

This article considers the Dirac field in polar formulation and shows that when torsion is taken in effective approximation the theory has the thermodynamic properties of a van der Waals gas. It is then shown that in the limit of zero chiral angle the van der Waals gas reduces to a Weyssenhoff fluid, and in spinlessness regime the Weyssenhoff fluid further reduces to a Newton particle. This nesting of approximations allows us to interpret the various spinor quantities. We will see that torsion will provide a form of negative pressure, while the chiral angle will be related to a type of temperature.

This paper presents for the first time a precise measurement of the production properties of the Z boson in the full phase space of the decay leptons. This is in contrast to the many previous precise unfolded measurements performed in the fiducial phase space of the decay leptons. The measurement is obtained from proton–proton collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment in 2012 at TeV at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb. The results, based on a total of 15.3 million Z-boson decays to electron and muon pairs, extend and improve a previous measurement of the full set of angular coefficients describing Z-boson decay. This Letter reports the observation of W Z γ production and a measurement of its cross section using 140.1±1.2 fb− 1 of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The W Z γ production cross section, with both the W and Z bosons decaying leptonically, p p→ W Z γ→ ℓ′±ν ℓ+ ℓ− γ (ℓ (′)= e, μ), is measured in a fiducial phase-space region defined such that the leptons and the photon have high transverse momentum and the photon is isolated. The cross section is found to be 2.01±0.30 (stat)±0.16 (syst) fb. The corresponding standard model predicted cross section calculated at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and at leading order in the electroweak coupling constant is 1.50±0.06 fb. The observed significance of the W Z γ signal is 6.3 σ, compared with an expected significance of 5.0 σ.

The inclusive top-quark-pair production cross section σ t t¯ and its ratio to the Z-boson production cross section have been measured in proton–proton collisions at s= 13.6 TeV, using 29 fb− 1 of data collected in 2022 with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Using events with an opposite-charge electron-muon pair and b-tagged jets, and assuming Standard Model decays, the top-quark-pair production cross section is measured to be σ t t¯= 850±3 (stat.)±18 (syst.)±20 (lumi.) pb. The ratio of the t t¯ and the Z-boson production cross sections is also measured, where the Z-boson contribution is determined for inclusive e+ e− and μ+ μ− events in a fiducial phase space. The relative uncertainty on the ratio is reduced compared to the t t¯ cross section, thanks to the cancellation of several systematic uncertainties. On differential manifolds with spinor structure, it is possible to express the Euler and Pontryagin currents in terms of tensors that also appear as source in the Dirac equation. It is hence possible to tie concepts rooted in geometry and topology to dynamical characters of quantum matter. Examples in various low-dimensional systems are provided to ease visualization.

The first evidence for the Higgs boson decay to a Z boson and a photon is presented, with a statistical significance of 3.4 standard deviations. The result is derived from a combined analysis of the searches performed by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations with proton-proton collision datasets collected at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) from 2015 to 2018. These correspond to integrated luminosities of around 140 fb− 1 for each experiment, at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The measured signal yield is 2.2±0.7 times the standard model prediction, and agrees with the theoretical expectation within 1.9 standard deviations.

We consider the Lie derivative along Killing vector fields of the Dirac relativistic spinors: By using the polar decomposition we acquire the mean to study the implementation of symmetries on Dirac fields. Specifically, we will become able to examine under what conditions it is equivalent to impose a symmetry upon a spinor or only upon its observables. For one physical application, we discuss the role of the above analysis for the specific spherical symmetry, obtaining some no-go theorem regarding spinors and discussing the generality of our approach.

The measurement of hard scatterings in proton-nucleus collisions has resulted in a greater understanding of both the proton and nuclear structure. ATLAS measured the centrality dependence of the dijet yield using 165 nb of +Pb data collected at = 8.16 TeV in 2016. The event centrality, which reflects the +Pb impact parameter, is characterized by the total transverse energy registered in the Pb-going side of the forward calorimeter. The central-to-peripheral ratio of the scaled dijet yields, , is evaluated, and the results are presented as a function of variables that reflect the kinematics of the initial hard parton scattering process. The shows a scaling with the Bjorken- of the parton originating from the proton, , while no such trend is observed as a function of . This analysis provides unique input to understanding the role of small proton spatial configurations in +Pb collisions by covering parton momentum fractions from the valence region down to and .

A search for pair-produced vector-like quarks using events with exactly one lepton (e or ), at least four jets including at least one b-tagged jet, and large missing transverse momentum is presented. Data from proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 , recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC from 2015 to 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb, are analysed. Vector-like partners T and B of the top and bottom quarks are considered, as is a vector-like X with charge , assuming their decay into a W, Z, or Higgs boson and a third-generation quark. No significant deviations from the Standard Model expectation are observed. Upper limits on the production cross-section of T and B quark pairs as a function of their mass are derived for various decay branching ratio scenarios. Measurements of single-, double-, and triple-differential cross-sections are presented for boosted top-quark pair-production in 13 TeV proton–proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The top quarks are observed through their hadronic decay and reconstructed as large-radius jets with the leading jet having transverse momentum (p T) greater than 500 GeV. The observed data are unfolded to remove detector effects. The particle-level cross-section, multiplied by the branching fraction and measured in a fiducial phase space defined by requiring the leading and second-leading jets to have p T> 500 GeV and p T> 350 GeV, respectively, is 331±3 (stat.)±39 (syst.) fb. This is approximately 20% lower than the prediction of fb by P owheg+ P ythia 8 with next-to-leading-order (NLO) accuracy but consistent within the theoretical uncertainties. The mass of the Higgs boson is measured in the H→ γ γ decay channel, exploiting the high resolution of the invariant mass of photon pairs reconstructed from the decays of Higgs bosons produced in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy s= 13 TeV. The dataset was collected between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb− 1. The measured value of the Higgs boson mass is 125.17±0.11 (stat.)±0.09 (syst.) GeV and is based on an improved energy scale calibration for photons, whose impact on the measurement is about four times smaller than in the previous publication. A combination with the corresponding measurement using 7 and 8 TeV pp collision ATLAS data results in a Higgs boson mass measurement of 125.22±0.11 (stat.)±0.09 (syst.) GeV. Searches for long-lived particles (LLPs) are among the most promising avenues for discovering physics beyond the Standard Model at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). However, displaced signatures are notoriously difficult to identify due to their ability to evade standard object reconstruction strategies. In particular, the ATLAS track reconstruction applies strict pointing requirements which limit sensitivity to charged particles originating far from the primary interaction point. To recover efficiency for LLPs decaying within the tracking detector volume, the ATLAS Collaboration employs a dedicated large-radius tracking (LRT) pass with loosened pointing requirements. During Run 2 of the LHC, the LRT implementation produced many incorrectly reconstructed tracks and was therefore only deployed in small subsets of events. In this paper, we explore the field propagator with a structure that is general enough to encompas both the case of newly-defined mass-dimension 1 fermions and spin-1/2 bosons. The method we employ is to define a map between spinors of different Lounesto classes, and then write the propagator in terms of the corresponding dual structures.

In a special run of the LHC with km, proton–proton elastic-scattering events were recorded at TeV with an integrated luminosity of\(340~\upmu {\text {b}}^{-1}\) using the ALFA subdetector of ATLAS in 2016. The elastic cross section was measured differentially in the Mandelstam t variable in the range from GeV to GeV using 6.9 million elastic-scattering candidates. This paper presents measurements of the total cross section, parameters of the nuclear slope, and the-parameter defined as the ratio of the real part to the imaginary part of the elastic-scattering amplitude in the limit. We consider quantum mechanics written in hydrodynamic formulation for the case of relativistic spinor fields to study their velocity: within such a hydrodynamic formulation it is possible to see that the velocity as is usually defined can not actually represent the tangent vector to the trajectories of particles. We propose an alternative definition for this tangent vector and hence for the trajectories of particles, which we believe to be new and the only one possible. We discuss how these results are a necessary step to take in order to face further problems, like the definition of trajectories for multi-particle systems or ensembles, as they happen to be useful in many applications and interpretations of quantum mechanics.
