The measurement of hard scatterings in proton-nucleus collisions has resulted in a greater understanding of both the proton and nuclear structure. ATLAS measured the centrality dependence of the dijet yield using 165 nb of +Pb data collected at = 8.16 TeV in 2016. The event centrality, which reflects the +Pb impact parameter, is characterized by the total transverse energy registered in the Pb-going side of the forward calorimeter. The central-to-peripheral ratio of the scaled dijet yields, , is evaluated, and the results are presented as a function of variables that reflect the kinematics of the initial hard parton scattering process. The shows a scaling with the Bjorken- of the parton originating from the proton, , while no such trend is observed as a function of . This analysis provides unique input to understanding the role of small proton spatial configurations in +Pb collisions by covering parton momentum fractions from the valence region down to and .

This paper presents for the first time a precise measurement of the production properties of the Z boson in the full phase space of the decay leptons. This is in contrast to the many previous precise unfolded measurements performed in the fiducial phase space of the decay leptons. The measurement is obtained from proton–proton collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment in 2012 at TeV at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb. The results, based on a total of 15.3 million Z-boson decays to electron and muon pairs, extend and improve a previous measurement of the full set of angular coefficients describing Z-boson decay. The double-differential cross-section distributions in Z-boson transverse momentum  and rapidity  are measured in the pole region, defined as GeV, over the range . A search is conducted for new phenomena in events with a top quark pair and large missing transverse momentum, where the top quark pair is reconstructed in final states with one isolated electron or muon and multiple jets. The search is performed using the Large Hadron Collider proton--proton collision data sample at a centre-of-mass energy of TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb. An analysis based on neural network classifiers is optimised to search for directly produced pairs of supersymmetric partners of the top quark (stop), and to search for spin-0 mediators, produced in association with a pair of top quarks, that decay into dark-matter particles. In the stop search, the analysis is designed to target models in which the mass difference between the stop and the neutralino from the stop decay is close to the top quark mass. This new search is combined with previously published searches in final states with different lepton multiplicities. No significant excess above the Standard Model background is observed, and limits at 95% confidence level are set. Models with neutralinos with masses up to 570 GeV are excluded, while for small neutralino masses models are excluded for stop masses up to 1230 GeV. Scalar (pseudoscalar) dark matter mediator masses as large as 350 (370) GeV are excluded when the coupling strengths of the mediator to Standard Model and dark-matter particles are both set to one. At lower mediator masses, models with production cross-sections as small as 0.15 (0.16) times the nominal predictions are excluded. Results of this search are also used to set …

A search for a heavy CP-odd Higgs boson, A, decaying into a Z boson and a heavy CP-even Higgs boson, H, is presented. It uses the full LHC Run 2 dataset of pp collisions at s= 13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb− 1. The search for A→ ZH is performed in the ℓ+ ℓ− tt and ννbb final states and surpasses the reach of previous searches in different final states in the region with mH> 350 GeV and mA> 800 GeV. No significant deviation from the Standard Model expectation is found. Upper limits are placed on the production cross-section times the decay branching ratios. Limits with less model dependence are also presented as functions of the reconstructed m (tt) and m (bb) distributions in the ℓ+ ℓ− tt and ννbb channels, respectively. In addition, the results are interpreted in the context of two-Higgs-doublet models.

The identification of jets originating from quarks and gluons, often referred to as quark/gluon tagging, plays an important role in various analyses performed at the Large Hadron Collider, as Standard Model measurements and searches for new particles decaying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-induced background. This paper describes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers developed within the ATLAS Collaboration, using TeV proton–proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb collected by the ATLAS experiment. Two taggers with high performances in rejecting jets from gluon over jets from quarks are studied: one tagger is based on requirements on the number of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet, and the other combines several jet substructure observables using a boosted decision tree. A method is established to determine the quark/gluon fraction in data, by using quark/gluon-enriched subsamples defined by the jet pseudorapidity. Differences in tagging efficiency between data and simulation are provided for jets with transverse momentum between 500 GeV and 2 TeV and for multiple tagger working points.

The first evidence for the Higgs boson decay to a Z boson and a photon is presented, with a statistical significance of 3.4 standard deviations. The result is derived from a combined analysis of the searches performed by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations with proton-proton collision datasets collected at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) from 2015 to 2018. These correspond to integrated luminosities of around 140 fb− 1 for each experiment, at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The measured signal yield is 2.2±0.7 times the standard model prediction, and agrees with the theoretical expectation within 1.9 standard deviations.

This Letter reports the observation of τ-lepton pair production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions, Pb+Pb→Pb(γγ→ττ)Pb, and constraints on the τ-lepton anomalous magnetic moment, aτ. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.44 nb-1 of LHC Pb+Pb collisions at =5.02 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2018. Selected events contain one muon from a τ-lepton decay, an electron or charged-particle track(s) from the other τ-lepton decay, little additional central-detector activity, and no forward neutrons. The γγ→ττ process is observed in Pb+Pb collisions with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations, and a signal strength of μττ=1.03 assuming the Standard Model value for aτ. To measure aτ, a template fit to the muon transverse-momentum distribution from τ-lepton candidates is performed, using a dimuon (γγ→μμ) control sample to constrain systematic uncertainties. The observed 95% confidence-level interval for aτ is -0.057 < aτ < 0.024.

It is based on 4.6 fb - 1 of s = 7 TeV p p collision data collected during 2011 by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. A three-class, multidimensional event classifier based on support vector machines is used to differentiate t t ¯ events from backgrounds. The t t ¯ production cross section is found to be σ t t ¯ = 168.5 ± 0.7 ( stat ) - 5.9 + 6.2 ( syst ) - 3.2 + 3.4 ( lumi ) pb . The result is consistent with the Standard Model prediction based on QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order.

We present measurements of cross sections for production of a leptonically decaying Z boson in association with a large-radius jet in 13 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC, using 36 fb - 1 of data from the ATLAS detector. Integrated and differential cross sections are measured at particle level in both a flavor inclusive and a doubly b -tagged fiducial phase space. The large-radius jet mass and transverse momentum, its kinematic relationship to the Z boson, and the angular separation of b -tagged small-radius track jets within the large-radius jet are measured. This measurement constitutes an important test of perturbative quantum chromodynamics in kinematic and flavor configurations relevant to several Higgs boson and beyond-Standard-Model physics analyses. The results highlight issues with modeling of additional hadronic activity in the flavor-inclusive selection, and a distinction between flavor-number schemes in the b -tagged phase space.

Measurements of Higgs boson production cross-sections are carried out in the diphoton decay channel using 139 fb− 1 of pp collision data at= 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The analysis is based on the definition of 101 distinct signal regions using machine-learning techniques. The inclusive Higgs boson signal strength in the diphoton channel is measured to be. Cross-sections for gluon-gluon fusion, vector-boson fusion, associated production with a W or Z boson, and top associated production processes are reported. An upper limit of 10 times the Standard Model prediction is set for the associated production process of a Higgs boson with a single top quark, which has a unique sensitivity to the sign of the top quark Yukawa coupling. Higgs boson production is further characterized through measurements of Simplified Template Cross-Sections (STXS). In total, cross-sections of …

A search for pair-produced scalar or vector leptoquarks decaying into a b-quark and a -lepton is presented using the full LHC Run 2 (2015–2018) data sample of 139 fb collected with the ATLAS detector in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of  TeV. Events in which at least one -lepton decays hadronically are considered, and multivariate discriminants are used to extract the signals. No significant deviations from the Standard Model expectation are observed and 95% confidence-level upper limits on the production cross-section are derived as a function of leptoquark mass and branching ratio into a -lepton and b-quark. For scalar leptoquarks, masses below 1460 GeV are excluded assuming %, while for vector leptoquarks the corresponding limit is 1650 GeV (1910 GeV) in the minimal-coupling (Yang–Mills) scenario.

Studies of the correlations of the two highest transverse momentum (leading) jets in individual Pb+ Pb collision events can provide information about the mechanism of jet quenching by the hot and dense matter created in such collisions. In Pb+ Pb and p p collisions at s N N= 5.02 TeV, measurements of the leading dijet transverse momentum (p T) correlations are presented. Additionally, measurements in Pb+ Pb collisions of the dijet pair nuclear modification factors projected along leading and subleading jet p T are made. The measurements are performed using the ATLAS detector at the LHC with 260 pb− 1 of p p data collected in 2017 and 2.2 nb− 1 of Pb+ Pb data collected in 2015 and 2018. An unfolding procedure is applied to the two-dimensional leading and subleading jet p T distributions to account for experimental effects in the measurement of both jets. The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider has been used to measure jet substructure modification and suppression in Pb+ Pb collisions at a nucleon–nucleon center-of-mass energy s N N= 5.02 TeV in comparison with proton–proton (p p) collisions at s= 5.02 TeV. This Letter reports the observation of τ-lepton-pair production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions Pb+ Pb→ Pb (γ γ→ τ τ) Pb and constraints on the τ-lepton anomalous magnetic moment a τ. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.44 nb− 1 of LHC Pb+ Pb collisions at s NN= 5.02 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2018. Selected events contain one muon from a τ-lepton decay, an electron or charged-particle track (s) from the other τ-lepton decay, little additional central-detector activity, and no forward neutrons. The γ γ→ τ τ process is observed in Pb+ Pb collisions with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations and a signal strength of μ τ τ= 1.0 3− 0.05+ 0.06 assuming the standard model value for a τ. To measure a τ, a template fit to the muon transverse-momentum distribution from τ-lepton candidates is performed, using a dimuon (γ γ→ μ μ) control sample to constrain systematic uncertainties. The observed 95% confidence-level interval for a τ is− 0.057< a τ< 0.024.

This letter presents a measurement of the nuclear modification factor of large-radius jets in TeV Pb+Pb collisions by the ATLAS experiment. The measurement is performed using 1.72 nb and 257 pb of Pb+Pb and data, respectively. The large-radius jets are reconstructed with the anti- algorithm using a radius parameter of , by re-clustering anti- jets, and are measured over the transverse momentum () kinematic range of GeV and absolute pseudorapidity . The large-radius jet constituents are further re-clustered using the algorithm in order to obtain the splitting parameters, and , which characterize the transverse momentum scale and angular separation for the hardest splitting in the jet, respectively. The nuclear modification factor, , obtained by comparing the Pb+Pb jet yields to those in collisions, is measured as a function of jet transverse momentum () and or . A significant difference in the quenching of large-radius jets having single sub-jet and those with more complex substructure is observed. Systematic comparison of jet suppression in terms of for different jet definitions is also provided. Presented results support the hypothesis that jets with hard internal splittings lose more energy through quenching and provide a new perspective for understanding the role of jet structure in jet suppression.

A search for Higgs boson pair production in events with two b-jets and two τ-leptons is presented, using a proton–proton collision dataset with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb− 1 collected at= 13 TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Higgs boson pairs produced non-resonantly or in the decay of a narrow scalar resonance in the mass range from 251 to 1600 GeV are targeted. Events in which at least one τ-lepton decays hadronically are considered, and multivariate discriminants are used to reject the backgrounds. No significant excess of events above the expected background is observed in the non-resonant search. The largest excess in the resonant search is observed at a resonance mass of 1 TeV, with a local (global) significance of 3. 1σ (2. 0σ). We study the processes e+e-→K+K-π0π0π0γ, KS0K±π?π0π0γ, and KS0K±π?π+π-γ in which an energetic photon is radiated from the initial state. The data were collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. About 1200, 2600, and 6000 events, respectively, are selected from a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 469 fb-1. The invariant mass of the hadronic final state defines the effective e+e- center-of-mass energy. The center-of-mass energies range from threshold to 4.5 GeV. From the mass spectra, the first ever measurements of the e+e-→K+K-π0π0π0, e+e-→KS0K±π?π0π0, and e+e-→KS0K±π?π+π- cross sections are performed. The contributions from the intermediate states that include η, φ, ρ, K∗(892), and other resonances are presented. We observe the J/ψ and ψ(2S) in most of these final states and measure the corresponding branching fractions, many of them for the first time.

Measurements of single-, double-, and triple-differential cross-sections are presented for boosted top-quark pair-production in 13 TeV proton–proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The top quarks are observed through their hadronic decay and reconstructed as large-radius jets with the leading jet having transverse momentum (p T) greater than 500 GeV. The observed data are unfolded to remove detector effects. The particle-level cross-section, multiplied by the branching fraction and measured in a fiducial phase space defined by requiring the leading and second-leading jets to have p T> 500 GeV and p T> 350 GeV, respectively, is 331±3 (stat.)±39 (syst.) fb. This is approximately 20% lower than the prediction of fb by P owheg+ P ythia 8 with next-to-leading-order (NLO) accuracy but consistent within the theoretical uncertainties. Results are also presented at the parton level …

A new dark sector antibaryon, denoted ψ D, could be produced in decays of B mesons. This Letter presents a search for B+→ ψ D+ p (and the charge conjugate) decays in e+ e− annihilations at 10.58 GeV, using data collected in the BABAR experiment. Data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 398 fb− 1 are analyzed. No evidence for a signal is observed. Branching fraction upper limits in the range from 10− 7–10− 5 are obtained at 90% confidence level for masses of 1.0< m ψ D< 4.3 GeV/c 2. The result is also reinterpreted to provide the first limits on a supersymmetric model with R-parity violation and a light neutralino.
