Measurements of azimuthal anisotropy of nonprompt D0 mesons in PbPb collisions at sNN= 5.02 TeV

Measurements of the elliptic (v 2) and triangular (v 3) azimuthal anisotropy coefficients are presented for Image 1 mesons produced in Image 2 hadron decays (nonprompt Image 1 mesons) in lead-lead collisions at s NN= 5.02 TeV. The results are compared with previously published charm meson anisotropies measured using prompt Image 1 mesons. The data were collected with the CMS detector in 2018 with an integrated luminosity of 0.58 nb− 1. Azimuthal anisotropy is sensitive to the interactions of quarks with the hot and dense medium created in heavy ion collisions. Comparing results for prompt and nonprompt Image 1 mesons can assist in understanding the mass dependence of these interactions. The nonprompt results show lower magnitudes of v 2 and v 3 and weaker dependences on the meson transverse momentum and collision centrality than those found for prompt Image 1 mesons. Reaction plane correlated triangular flow in collisions at GeV

We measure triangular flow relative to the reaction plane at 3 GeV center-of-mass energy in Au+ Au collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. A significant v 3 signal for protons is observed, which increases for higher rapidity, higher transverse momentum, and more peripheral collisions. The triangular flow is essentially rapidity-odd with a slope at midrapidity, d v 3/d y|(y= 0), opposite in sign compared to the slope for directed flow. No significant v 3 signal is observed for charged pions and kaons. Comparisons with models suggest that a mean field potential is required to describe these results, and that the triangular shape of the participant nucleons is the result of stopping and nuclear geometry.

Longitudinal and transverse spin transfer to and hyperons in polarized collisions at

The longitudinal and transverse spin transfers to Λ (Λ) hyperons in polarized proton-proton collisions are expected to be sensitive to the helicity and transversity distributions, respectively, of (anti) strange quarks in the proton, and to the corresponding polarized fragmentation functions. We report improved measurements of the longitudinal spin transfer coefficient, D L L, and the transverse spin transfer coefficient, D T T, to Λ and Λin polarized proton-proton collisions at s= 200 GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The dataset includes longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions with an integrated luminosity of 52 pb− 1, and transversely polarized proton-proton collisions with a similar integrated luminosity. Both datasets have about twice the statistics of previous results and cover a kinematic range of| η Λ (Λ)|< 1.2 and transverse momentum p T, Λ (Λ) up to 8 GeV/c. Jet-hadron correlations with respect to the event plane in GeV collisions in STAR

Angular distributions of charged particles relative to jet axes are studied in s N N= 200 GeV Au+ Au collisions as a function of the jet orientation with respect to the event plane. This differential study tests the expected path-length dependence of energy loss experienced by a hard-scattered parton as it traverses the hot and dense medium formed in heavy-ion collisions. A second-order event plane is used in the analysis as an experimental estimate of the reaction plane formed by the collision impact parameter and the beam direction. Charged-particle jets with 15< p T, jet< 20 and 20< p T, jet< 40 GeV/c were reconstructed with the anti-k T algorithm with radius parameter setting of R= 0.4 in the 20–50% centrality bin to maximize the initial-state eccentricity of the interaction region. NνDEx-100 conceptual design report

Observing nuclear neutrinoless double beta (0) decay would be a revolutionary result in particle physics. Observing such a decay would prove that the neutrinos are their own antiparticles, help to study the absolute mass of neutrinos, explore the origin of their mass, and may explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry in our universe by lepton number violation. We propose developing a time projection chamber (TPC) using high-pressure SeF gas and Topmetal silicon sensors for readout in the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of Se, called the NDEx experiment. Besides being located at CJPL with the world’s thickest rock shielding, NDEx combines the advantages of the high (2.996 MeV) of Se and the TPC’s ability to distinguish signal and background events using their different topological characteristics. Results on Elastic Cross Sections in Proton–Proton Collisions at s= 510 GeV with the STAR Detector at RHIC

We report results on an elastic cross section measurement in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy s= 510 GeV, obtained with the Roman Pot setup of the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The elastic differential cross section is measured in the four-momentum transfer squared range 0.23≤− t≤ 0.67 GeV 2. This is the only measurement of the proton-proton elastic cross section in this t range for collision energies above the Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) and below the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) colliders. We find that a constant slope B does not fit the data in the aforementioned t range, and we obtain a much better fit using a second-order polynomial for B (t). This is the first measurement below the LHC energies for which the non-constant behavior B (t) is observed. Observation of the electromagnetic field effect via charge-dependent directed flow in heavy-ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

The deconfined quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions enables the exploration of the fundamental properties of matter under extreme conditions. Noncentral collisions can produce strong magnetic fields on the order of 10 18 G, which offers a probe into the electrical conductivity of the QGP. In particular, quarks and antiquarks carry opposite charges and receive contrary electromagnetic forces that alter their momenta. This phenomenon can be manifested in the collective motion of final-state particles, specifically in the rapidity-odd directed flow, denoted as v 1 (y). Here, we present the charge-dependent measurements of d v 1/d y near midrapidities for π±, K±, and p (p) in Au+ Au and isobar (Ru 44 96+ Ru 44 96 and Zr 40 96+ Zr 40 96) collisions at s NN= 200 GeV, and in Au+ Au collisions at 27 GeV, recorded by the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Tomography of ultrarelativistic nuclei with polarized photon-gluon collisions

A linearly polarized photon can be quantized from the Lorentz-boosted electromagnetic field of a nucleus traveling at ultrarelativistic speed. When two relativistic heavy nuclei pass one another at a distance of a few nuclear radii, the photon from one nucleus may interact through a virtual quark-antiquark pair with gluons from the other nucleus, forming a short-lived vector meson (e.g., ρ0). In this experiment, the polarization was used in diffractive photoproduction to observe a unique spin interference pattern in the angular distribution of ρ0 → π+π− decays. The observed interference is a result of an overlap of two wave functions at a distance an order of magnitude larger than the ρ0 travel distance within its lifetime. The strong-interaction nuclear radii were extracted from these diffractive interactions and found to be 6.53 ± 0.06 fm (197Au) and 7.29 ± 0.08 fm (238U), larger than the nuclear charge radii.
