The first evidence for X (3872) production in relativistic heavy ion collisions is reported. The X (3872) production is studied in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s NN= 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair, using the decay chain X (3872)→ J/ψ π+ π−→ μ+ μ− π+ π−. The data were recorded with the CMS detector in 2018 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb− 1. The measurement is performed in the rapidity and transverse momentum ranges| y|< 1.6 and 15< p T< 50 GeV/c. The significance of the inclusive X (3872) signal is 4.2 standard deviations. The prompt X (3872) to ψ 2 S yield ratio is found to be ρ Pb− Pb= 1.08±0.49 (stat)±0.52 (syst), to be compared with typical values of 0.1 for p p collisions. This result provides a unique experimental input to theoretical models of the X (3872) production mechanism, and of the nature of this exotic state.

Measurements of the fiducial inclusive and differential production cross sections of the Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions at= 13 TeV are performed using events where the Higgs boson decays into a pair of W bosons that subsequently decay into a final state with an electron, a muon, and a pair of neutrinos. The analysis is based on data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC during 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb− 1. Production cross sections are measured as a function of the transverse momentum of the Higgs boson and the associated jet multiplicity. The Higgs boson signal is extracted and simultaneously unfolded to correct for selection efficiency and resolution effects using maximum-likelihood fits to the observed distributions in data. The integrated fiducial cross section is measured to be 86. 5±9. 5 fb, consistent with the Standard Model expectation of 82. 5±4. 2 fb …

The second-order Fourier coefficients (v 2) characterizing the azimuthal distributions of Image 3 and Image 4 mesons produced in PbPb collisions at s NN= 5.02 TeV are studied. The Image 5 mesons are reconstructed in their dimuon decay channel, as measured by the CMS detector. The collected data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb− 1. The scalar product method is used to extract the v 2 coefficients of the azimuthal distributions. Results are reported for the rapidity range| y|< 2.4, in the transverse momentum interval 0< p T< 50 GeV/c, and in three centrality ranges of 10–30%, 30–50% and 50–90%. In contrast to the J/ψ mesons, the measured v 2 values for the Image 5 mesons are found to be consistent with zero.

Measurements of the second Fourier harmonic coefficient (v 2) of the azimuthal distributions of prompt and nonprompt D 0 mesons produced in p p and p Pb collisions are presented. Nonprompt D 0 mesons come from beauty hadron decays. The data samples are collected by the CMS experiment at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies of 13 and 8.16 TeV, respectively. In high multiplicity p p collisions, v 2 signals for prompt charm hadrons are reported for the first time, and are found to be comparable to those for light-flavor hadron species over a transverse momentum (p T) range of 2–6 GeV. Compared at similar event multiplicities, the prompt D 0 meson v 2 values in p p and p Pb collisions are similar in magnitude. The v 2 values for open beauty hadrons are extracted for the first time via nonprompt D 0 mesons in p Pb collisions. For p T in the range of 2–5 GeV, the results suggest that v 2 for nonprompt D 0 …

The strong Coulomb field created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is expected to produce a rapidity-dependent difference (Δ v 2) in the second Fourier coefficient of the azimuthal distribution (elliptic flow, v 2) between D 0 (u‾ c) and D‾ 0 (u c‾) mesons. Motivated by the search for evidence of this field, the CMS detector at the LHC is used to perform the first measurement of Δ v 2. The rapidity-averaged value is found to be< Δ v 2>= 0.001±0.001 (stat)±0.003 (syst) in PbPb collisions at s NN= 5.02 TeV. In addition, the influence of the collision geometry is explored by measuring the D 0 and D‾ 0 mesons v 2 and triangular flow coefficient (v 3) as functions of rapidity, transverse momentum (p T), and event centrality (a measure of the overlap of the two Pb nuclei). A clear centrality dependence of prompt D 0 meson v 2 values is observed, while the v 3 is largely independent of centrality. These trends are consistent with …

Event-by-event long-range correlations of azimuthal anisotropy Fourier coefficients (v n) in 8.16 TeV p Pb data, collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, are extracted using a subevent four-particle cumulant technique applied to very low multiplicity events. Each combination of four charged particles is selected from either two, three, or four distinct subevent regions of a pseudorapidity range from− 2.4 to 2.4 of the CMS tracker, and with transverse momentum between 0.3 and 3.0 GeV. Using the subevent cumulant technique, correlations between v n of different orders are measured as functions of particle multiplicity and compared to the standard cumulant method without subevents over a wide event multiplicity range. At high multiplicities, the v 2 and v 3 coefficients exhibit an anticorrelation; this behavior is observed consistently using various methods. The v 2 and v 4 correlation strength …

We present the first study of charged-hadron production associated with jets originating from b quarks in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The data sample used in this study was collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 27.4 pb− 1. To characterize the jet substructure, the differential jet shapes, defined as the normalized transverse momentum distribution of charged hadrons as a function of angular distance from the jet axis, are measured for b jets. In addition to the jet shapes, the per-jet yields of charged particles associated with b jets are also quantified, again as a function of the angular distance with respect to the jet axis. Extracted jet shape and particle yield distributions for b jets are compared with results for inclusive jets, as well as with the predictions from the pythia and herwig++ event generators.

Jet production in lead-lead (PbPb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV is studied with the CMS detector at the LHC, using PbPb and pp data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of 404 μb− 1 and 27.4 pb− 1, respectively. Jets with different areas are reconstructed using the anti-k T algorithm by varying the distance parameter R. The measurements are performed using jets with transverse momenta (p T) greater than 200 GeV and in a pseudorapidity range of| η|< 2. To reveal the medium modification of the jet spectra in PbPb collisions, the properly normalized ratio of spectra from PbPb and pp data is used to extract jet nuclear modification factors as functions of the PbPb collision centrality, p T and, for the first time, as a function of R up to 1.0. For the most central collisions, a strong suppression is observed for high-p T jets reconstructed with all …

The fiducial cross section for Y (1 S) pair production in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in the region where both Y (1 S) mesons have an absolute rapidity below 2.0 is measured to be 79±11 (stat)±6 (syst)±3 (B) pb assuming the mesons are produced unpolarized. The last uncertainty corresponds to the uncertainty in the Y (1 S) meson dimuon branching fraction. The measurement is performed in the final state with four muons using proton-proton collision data collected in 2016 by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb− 1. This process serves as a standard model reference in a search for narrow resonances decaying to Y (1 S) μ+ μ− in the same final state. Such a resonance could indicate the existence of a tetraquark that is a bound state of two b quarks and two b¯ antiquarks. The tetraquark search is performed for masses in the vicinity of …

The cross section of top quark pair production is measured in the\(\mathrm {t}\overline {\mathrm {t}}\to\left (\ell {\nu} _ {\ell}\right)\left ({\uptau} _ {\mathrm {h}}{\nu} _ {\uptau}\right)\mathrm {b}\overline {\mathrm {b}}\) final state, where τ h refers to the hadronic decays of the τ lepton, and ℓ is either an electron or a muon. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb− 1 collected in proton-proton collisions at= 13 TeV with the CMS detector. The measured cross section is= 781±7 (stat)±62 (syst)±20 (lumi) pb, and the ratio of the partial width Γ (t→ τν τ b) to the total decay width of the top quark is measured to be 0. 1050±0. 0009 (stat)±0. 0071 (syst). This is the first measurement of the production cross section in proton-proton collisions at= 13 TeV that explicitly includes τ leptons. A search for dark matter (DM) particles is performed using events with a Higgs boson candidate and large missing transverse momentum. The analysis is based on proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb− 1. The search is performed in five Higgs boson decay channels:, γγ, τ+ τ−, W+ W−, and ZZ. The results from the individual channels are combined to maximize the sensitivity of the analysis. No significant excess over the expected standard model background is observed in any of the five channels or in their combination. Limits are set on DM production in the context of two simplified models. The results are also interpreted in terms of a spin-independent DM-nucleon scattering cross section and compared to those from direct-detection DM experiments. This is the first search for …

A search is performed for a pseudoscalar Higgs boson, A, decaying into a 125 GeV Higgs boson h and a Z boson. The h boson is specifically targeted in its decay into a pair of tau leptons, while the Z boson decays into a pair of electrons or muons. A data sample of proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at= 13 TeV is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb− 1. No excess above the standard model background expectations is observed in data. A model-independent upper limit is set on the product of the gluon fusion production cross section for the A boson and the branching fraction to Zh→ ℓℓττ. The observed upper limit at 95% confidence level ranges from 27 to 5 fb for A boson masses from 220 to 400 GeV, respectively. The results are used to constrain the extended Higgs sector parameters for two benchmark scenarios of the minimal supersymmetric standard …

The running of the top quark mass is experimentally investigated for the first time. The mass of the top quark in the modified minimal subtraction (MS‾) renormalization scheme is extracted from a comparison of the differential top quark-antiquark (t t¯) cross section as a function of the invariant mass of the t t¯ system to next-to-leading-order theoretical predictions. The differential cross section is determined at the parton level by means of a maximum-likelihood fit to distributions of final-state observables. The analysis is performed using t t¯ candidate events in the e±μ∓ channel in proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb− 1. The extracted running is found to be compatible with the scale dependence predicted by the corresponding renormalization group equation. In this analysis, the …

A study of the production of prompt J/ψ mesons contained in jets in proton-proton collisions at s= 8 TeV is presented. The analysis is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.1 fb− 1 collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. For events with at least one observed jet, the angular separation between the J/ψ meson and the jet is used to test whether the J/ψ meson is part of the jet. The analysis shows that most prompt J/ψ mesons having energy above 15 GeV and rapidity| y|< 1 are contained in jets with pseudorapidity| η jet|< 1. The differential distributions of the probability to have a J/ψ meson contained in a jet as a function of jet energy for a fixed J/ψ energy fraction are compared to a theoretical model using the fragmenting jet function approach. The data agree best with fragmenting jet function calculations that use a long-distance matrix element parameter set in which prompt J/ψ mesons are …

A measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson in the diphoton decay channel is presented. This analysis is based on 35.9 fb− 1 of proton-proton collision data collected during the 2016 LHC running period, with the CMS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. A refined detector calibration and new analysis techniques have been used to improve the precision of this measurement. The Higgs boson mass is measured to be m H= 125.78±0.26 GeV. This is combined with a measurement of m H already performed in the H→ ZZ→ 4 ℓ decay channel using the same data set, giving m H= 125.46±0.16 GeV. This result, when further combined with an earlier measurement of m H using data collected in 2011 and 2012 with the CMS detector, gives a value for the Higgs boson mass of m H= 125.38±0.14 GeV. This is currently the most precise measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson.

A search is presented for long-lived charged particles that decay within the CMS detector and produce the signature of a disappearing track. Disappearing tracks are identified as those with little or no associated calorimeter energy deposits and with missing hits in the outer layers of the tracker. The search uses proton-proton collision data recorded at TeV that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 fb− 1. The results of the search are interpreted in the context of the anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB) model. The number of observed events is in agreement with the background expectation, and limits are set on the cross section of direct electroweak chargino production in terms of the chargino mass and mean proper lifetime. At 95% confidence level, AMSB models with a chargino mass less than 260 GeV, corresponding to a mean proper lifetime of 0.2 ns, are excluded.

A search is presented for additional scalar (H) or pseudoscalar (A) Higgs bosons decaying to a top quark pair in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data set analyzed corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb− 1 collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Final states with one or two charged leptons are considered. The invariant mass of the reconstructed top quark pair system and variables that are sensitive to the spin of the particles decaying into the top quark pair are used to search for signatures of the H or A bosons. The interference with the standard model top quark pair background is taken into account. A moderate signal-like deviation compatible with an A boson with a mass of 400 GeV is observed with a global significance of 1.9 standard deviations. New stringent constraints are reported on the strength of the coupling of the hypothetical bosons to the top quark, with …
