A method to deconvolve stellar profiles-The non-rotating line utilizing Gaussian sum approximation

Context Currently, one of the standard procedures used to determine stellar and wind parameters of massive stars involves to comparing the observed spectral lines with a grid of synthetic lines. These synthetic lines are calculated using non-local thermodynamic equilibrium radiative transfer codes. In this standard procedure, after estimating the stellar-projected rotational speed (v sin i), all synthetic models need to be convolved using this value in order to perform the comparison with the observed line and estimate the stellar parameters.Aims In this work, we propose a methodology to deconvolve the observed line profile to one from a non-rotating star. Thus, to perform a comparison, we will not need to convolve all the synthetic profiles, saving significant time and resources. Methods The proposed deconvolution method is based on transforming this inverse problem into an optimization of a direct problem. Uncertainty estimation in the classification of histopathological images with HER2 overexpression using Monte Carlo Dropout

Classification of breast cancer tissues with HER2 overexpression into 0, 1+, 2+, or 3+ categories is a crucial clinical task for determining HER2 positivity, and hence, prescribing the adjuvant HER2-targeted therapy. Deep learning-based methods have been fundamental for creating support tools that improve decision-making, and they have provided outstanding performance in the classification of histopathological images. However, the quantification of the uncertainty has been traditionally neglected when deep learning-based methods are used, despite its critical importance in healthcare applications. In this work we propose a new method, using deep learning and the Monte Carlo Dropout, to measure the uncertainty when classifying breast cancer tissue images with HER2 overexpression. The proposed method has four main stages including (1) WSI pre-processing, (2) patch dataset generation, (3) Bayesian …

A novel ensemble feature selection method for pixel-level segmentation of HER2 overexpression

Classifying histopathology images on a pixel-level requires sets of features able to capture the complex characteristics of the images, like the irregular cell morphology and the color heterogeneity on the tissue aspect. In this context, feature selection becomes a crucial step in the classification process such that it reduces model complexity and computational costs, avoids overfitting, and thereby it improves the model performance. In this study, we propose a new ensemble feature selection method by combining a set of base selectors, classifiers, and rank aggregation methods, aiming to determine from any initial set of handcrafted features, a smaller set of relevant color and texture pixel-level features, subsequently used for segmenting HER2 overexpression on a pixel-level, in breast cancer tissue images. We have been able to significantly reduce the set of initial features, using the proposed ensemble feature selection …

The ATLAS Fast TracKer System

The ATLAS Fast TracKer (FTK) was designed to provide full tracking for the ATLAS high-level trigger by using pattern recognition based on Associative Memory (AM) chips and fitting in high-speed field programmable gate arrays. The tracks found by the FTK are based on inputs from all modules of the pixel and silicon microstrip trackers. The as-built FTK system and components are described, as is the online software used to control them while running in the ATLAS data acquisition system. Also described is the simulation of the FTK hardware and the optimization of the AM pattern banks. An optimization for long-lived particles with large impact parameter values is included. A test of the FTK system with the data playback facility that allowed the FTK to be commissioned during the shutdown between Run 2 and Run 3 of the LHC is reported. The resulting tracks from part of the FTK system covering a limited - region of the detector are compared with the output from the FTK simulation. It is shown that FTK performance is in good agreement with the simulation.

Medium-Induced Modification of -Tagged Charged Particle Yields in Collisions at 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

The yield of charged particles opposite to a Z boson with large transverse momentum (p T) is measured in 260 pb− 1 of p p and 1.7 nb− 1 of Pb+ Pb collision data at 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The Z boson tag is used to select hard-scattered partons with specific kinematics, and to observe how their showers are modified as they propagate through the quark-gluon plasma created in Pb+ Pb collisions. Compared with p p collisions, charged-particle yields in Pb+ Pb collisions show significant modifications as a function of charged-particle p T in a way that depends on event centrality and Z boson p T. The data are compared with a variety of theoretical calculations and provide new information about the medium-induced energy loss of partons in a p T regime difficult to measure through other channels.

Two-particle azimuthal correlations in photonuclear ultraperipheral Pb+ Pb collisions at 5.02 TeV with ATLAS

Two-particle long-range azimuthal correlations are measured in photonuclear collisions using 1.7 nb− 1 of 5.02 TeV Pb+ Pb collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Candidate events are selected using a dedicated high-multiplicity photonuclear event trigger, a combination of information from the zero-degree calorimeters and forward calorimeters, and from pseudorapidity gaps constructed using calorimeter energy clusters and charged-particle tracks. Distributions of event properties are compared between data and Monte Carlo simulations of photonuclear processes. Two-particle correlation functions are formed using charged-particle tracks in the selected events, and a template-fitting method is employed to subtract the nonflow contribution to the correlation. Significant nonzero values of the second-and third-order flow coefficients are observed and presented as a …

Measurements of top-quark pair single- and double-differential cross-sections in the all-hadronic channel in pp collisions at s = 13 TeV using the …

Differential cross-sections are measured for top-quark pair production in the all-hadronic decay mode, using proton-proton collision events collected by the ATLAS experiment in which all six decay jets are separately resolved. Absolute and normalised single-and double-differential cross-sections are measured at particle and parton level as a function of various kinematic variables. Emphasis is placed on well-measured observables in fully reconstructed final states, as well as on the study of correlations between the top-quark pair system and additional jet radiation identified in the event. The study is performed using data from proton-proton collisions at= 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider in 2015 and 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb− 1. The rapidities of the individual top quarks and of the top-quark pair are well modelled by several independent …

Emulating the impact of additional proton-proton interactions in the ATLAS simulation by presampling sets of inelastic Monte Carlo events

The accurate simulation of additional interactions at the ATLAS experiment for the analysis of proton–proton collisions delivered by the Large Hadron Collider presents a significant challenge to the computing resources. During the LHC Run 2 (2015–2018), there were up to 70 inelastic interactions per bunch crossing, which need to be accounted for in Monte Carlo (MC) production. In this document, a new method to account for these additional interactions in the simulation chain is described. Instead of sampling the inelastic interactions and adding their energy deposits to a hard-scatter interaction one-by-one, the inelastic interactions are presampled, independent of the hard scatter, and stored as combined events. Consequently, for each hard-scatter interaction, only one such presampled event needs to be added as part of the simulation chain. For the Run 2 simulation chain, with an average of 35 interactions per …

Differential cross-section measurements for the electroweak production of dijets in association with a Z boson in proton–proton collisions at ATLAS

Differential cross-section measurements are presented for the electroweak production of two jets in association with a Z boson. These measurements are sensitive to the vector-boson fusion production mechanism and provide a fundamental test of the gauge structure of the Standard Model. The analysis is performed using proton–proton collision data collected by ATLAS at

Erratum to: Search for the HH→ bb¯ bb¯ process via vector-boson fusion production using proton-proton collisions at s= 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

One correction is noted for the paper. A wrong cross-section was used for the theory prediction in figure 6 due to not taking into account the VHH contamination properly in the rescaling formula for the signal samples. The change in the theory prediction leads to stricter exclusion limits on the di-vector-boson-di-Higgs-boson coupling modifier κ2V. The observed excluded region corresponds to κ2V<− 0. 43 and κ2V> 2. 56, while the expected exclusion is κ2V<− 0. 55 and κ2V> 2. 72.

Search for phenomena beyond the Standard Model in events with large b-jet multiplicity using the ATLAS detector at the LHC

A search is presented for new phenomena in events characterised by high jet multiplicity, no leptons (electrons or muons), and four or more jets originating from the fragmentation of b-quarks (b-jets). The search uses of= 13 TeV proton–proton collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider during Run 2. The dominant Standard Model background originates from multijet production and is estimated using a data-driven technique based on an extrapolation from events with low b-jet multiplicity to the high b-jet multiplicities used in the search. No significant excess over the Standard Model expectation is observed and 95% confidence-level limits that constrain simplified models of R-parity-violating supersymmetry are determined. The exclusion limits reach 950 GeV in top-squark mass in the models considered.

Search for new phenomena in final states with -jets and missing transverse momentum in TeV collisions with the ATLAS detector

The results of a search for new phenomena in final states with -jets and missing transverse momentum using 139 fb of proton-proton data collected at a centre-of-mass energy TeV by the ATLAS detector at the LHC are reported. The analysis targets final states produced by the decay of a pair-produced supersymmetric bottom squark into a bottom quark and a stable neutralino. The analysis also seeks evidence for models of pair production of dark matter particles produced through the decay of a generic scalar or pseudoscalar mediator state in association with a pair of bottom quarks, and models of pair production of scalar third-generation down-type leptoquarks. No significant excess of events over the Standard Model background expectation is observed in any of the signal regions considered by the analysis. Bottom squark masses below 1270 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level if the neutralino is massless. In the case of nearly mass-degenerate bottom squarks and neutralinos, the use of dedicated secondary-vertex identification techniques permits the exclusion of bottom squarks with masses up to 660 GeV for mass splittings between the squark and the neutralino of 10 GeV. These limits extend substantially beyond the regions of parameter space excluded by similar ATLAS searches performed previously.

Search for dark matter in association with an energetic photon in pp collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for dark matter is conducted in final states containing a photon and missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at= 13 TeV. The data, collected during 2015–2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb− 1. No deviations from the predictions of the Standard Model are observed and 95% confidence-level upper limits between 2.45 fb and 0.5 fb are set on the visible cross section for contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model, in different ranges of the missing transverse momentum. The results are interpreted as 95% confidence-level limits in models where weakly interacting dark-matter candidates are pair-produced via an s-channel axial-vector or vector mediator. Dark-matter candidates with masses up to 415 (580) GeV are excluded for axial-vector (vector) mediators, while the maximum excluded mass of the mediator is …

Search for squarks and gluinos in final states with one isolated lepton, jets, and missing transverse momentum at TeV with the ATLAS detector

The results of a search for gluino and squark pair production with the pairs decaying via the lightest charginos into a final state consisting of two bosons, the lightest neutralinos (), and quarks, are presented. The signal is characterised by the presence of a single charged lepton ( or ) from a boson decay, jets, and missing transverse momentum. The analysis is performed using 139 fb of proton-proton collision data taken at a centre-of-mass energy TeV delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded by the ATLAS experiment. No statistically significant excess of events above the Standard Model expectation is found. Limits are set on the direct production of squarks and gluinos in simplified models. Masses of gluino (squark) up to 2.2 TeV (1.4 TeV) are excluded at 95% confidence level for a light .

Search for new phenomena in events with two opposite-charge leptons, jets and missing transverse momentum in collisions at TeV with the ATLAS …

The results of a search for direct pair production of top squarks and for dark matter in events with two opposite-charge leptons (electrons or muons), jets and missing transverse momentum are reported, using 139 fb− 1 of integrated luminosity from proton-proton collisions at= 13 TeV, collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider during Run 2 (2015–2018). This search considers the pair production of top squarks and is sensitive across a wide range of mass differences between the top squark and the lightest neutralino. Additionally, spin-0 mediator dark-matter models are considered, in which the mediator is produced in association with a pair of top quarks. The mediator subsequently decays to a pair of dark-matter particles. No significant excess of events is observed above the Standard Model background, and limits are set at 95% confidence level. The results exclude top squark masses up to …

Determination of the parton distribution functions of the proton from ATLAS measurements of differential W±and Z boson production in association with jets

This paper presents an analysis at next-to-next-to-leading order in the theory of quantum chromodynamics for the determination of a new set of proton parton distribution functions using diverse measurements in pp collisions at , 8 and 13 TeV, performed by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, together with deep inelastic scattering data from ep collisions at the HERA collider. The ATLAS data sets considered are differential cross-section measurements of inclusive and boson production, and Z boson production in association with jets, production, inclusive jet production and direct photon production. In the analysis, particular attention is paid to the correlation of systematic uncertainties within and between the various ATLAS data sets and to the impact of model, theoretical and parameterisation uncertainties. The resulting set of parton distribution functions is called ATLASpdf21.

Measurements of WH and ZH production in the H→ bb¯ decay channel in pp collisions at $ $13\,\text {Te}\text {V} $$13 Te with the ATLAS detector

Measurements of the Standard Model Higgs boson decaying into a pair and produced in association with a W or Z boson decaying into leptons, using proton–proton collision data collected between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS detector, are presented. The measurements use collisions produced by the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of . The production of a Higgs boson in association with a W or Z boson is established with observed (expected) significances of 4.0 (4.1) and 5.3 (5.1) standard deviations, respectively. Cross-sections of associated production of a Higgs boson decaying into bottom quark pairs with an electroweak gauge boson, W or Z, decaying into leptons are measured as a function of the gauge boson transverse momentum in kinematic fiducial volumes. A search for new phenomena with top quark pairs in final states with one isolated electron or muon, multiple jets, and large missing transverse momentum is performed. Signal regions are designed to search for two-, three-, and four-body decays of the directly pair-produced supersymmetric partner of the top quark (stop). Additional signal regions are designed specifically to search for spin-0 mediators that are produced in association with a pair of top quarks and decay into a pair of dark-matter particles. Measurements of differential cross-sections in four-lepton events in 13 TeV proton-proton collisions with the ATLAS detector

Measurements of four-lepton differential and integrated fiducial cross-sections in events with two same-flavour, opposite-charge electron or muon pairs are presented. The data correspond to 139 fb− 1 of= 13 TeV proton-proton collisions, collected by the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider (2015–2018). The final state has contributions from a number of interesting Standard Model processes that dominate in different four-lepton invariant mass regions, including single Z boson production, Higgs boson production and on-shell ZZ production, with a complex mix of interference terms, and possible contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model. The differential cross-sections include the four-lepton invariant mass inclusively, in slices of other kinematic variables, and in different lepton flavour categories. Also measured are dilepton invariant masses, transverse momenta, and angular …

Search for pair production of third-generation scalar leptoquarks decaying into a top quark and a -lepton in collisions at TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for pair production of third-generation scalar leptoquarks decaying into a top quark and a τ-lepton is presented. The search is based on a dataset of pp collisions at= 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb− 1. Events are selected if they have one light lepton (electron or muon) and at least one hadronically decaying τ-lepton, or at least two light leptons. In addition, two or more jets, at least one of which must be identified as containing b-hadrons, are required. Six final states, defined by the multiplicity and flavour of lepton candidates, are considered in the analysis. Each of them is split into multiple event categories to simultaneously search for the signal and constrain several leading backgrounds. The signal-rich event categories require at least one hadronically decaying τ-lepton candidate and exploit the …
