Measurements of long-range two-particle correlation over a wide pseudorapidity range in pPb collisions at TeV

Correlations in azimuthal angle extending over a long range in pseudorapidity between particles, usually called the “ridge” phenomenon, were discovered in heavy-ion collisions, and later found in pp and p–Pb collisions. In large systems, they are thought to arise from the expansion (collective flow) of the produced particles. Extending these measurements over a wider range in pseudorapidity and final-state particle multiplicity is important to understand better the origin of these long-range correlations in small collision systems. In this Letter, measurements of the long-range correlations in p–Pb collisions at= 5. 02 TeV are extended to a pseudorapidity gap of∆ η~ 8 between particles using the ALICE forward multiplicity detectors. After suppressing non-flow correlations, eg, from jet and resonance decays, the ridge structure is observed to persist up to a very large gap of∆ η~ 8 for the first time in p–Pb collisions …

Femtoscopic correlations of identical charged pions and kaons in collisions at TeV with event-shape selection

Collective behavior has been observed in high-energy heavy-ion collisions for several decades. Collectivity is driven by the high particle multiplicities that are produced in these collisions. At the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), features of collectivity have also been seen in high-multiplicity proton-proton collisions that can attain particle multiplicities comparable to peripheral Pb-Pb collisions. One of the possible signatures of collective behavior is the decrease of femtoscopic radii extracted from pion and kaon pairs emitted from high-multiplicity collisions with increasing pair transverse momentum. This decrease can be described in terms of an approximate transverse mass scaling. In the present work, femtoscopic analyses are carried out by the ALICE Collaboration on charged pion and kaon pairs produced in p p collisions at s= 13 TeV from the LHC to study possible collectivity in p p collisions. System-size dependence of the hadronic rescattering effect at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

The first measurements of K*(892) 0 resonance production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity in Xe-Xe collisions at s N N= 5.44 TeV and p p collisions at s= 5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector are presented. The resonance is reconstructed at midrapidity (| y|< 0.5) using the hadronic decay channel K* 0→ K±π∓. Measurements of transverse-momentum integrated yield, mean transverse-momentum, nuclear modification factor of K* 0, and yield ratios of resonance to stable hadron (K* 0/K) are compared across different collision systems (p p, p-Pb, Xe-Xe, and Pb-Pb) at similar collision energies to investigate how the production of K* 0 resonances depends on the size of the system formed in these collisions. The hadronic rescattering effect is found to be independent of the size of colliding systems and mainly driven by the produced charged-particle multiplicity, which is a proxy of the volume of produced …

Measurements of , , p and spectra in collisions at 13A to 150A

The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron studies the onset of deconfinement in strongly interacting matter through a beam energy scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei of varied sizes. This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and mean multiplicities of , , p and produced in collisions at beam momenta of 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A . The analysis uses the 10% most central collisions, where the observed forward energy defines centrality. The energy dependence of the / ratios as well as of inverse slope parameters of the transverse mass distributions are placed in between those found in inelastic and central Pb + Pb collisions. The results obtained here establish a system-size dependence of hadron production properties that so far cannot be explained either …

First Measurement of the Dependence of Incoherent Photonuclear Production

The first measurement of the cross section for incoherent photonuclear production of J/ψ vector mesons as a function of the Mandelstam| t| variable is presented. The measurement was carried out with the ALICE detector at midrapidity,| y|< 0.8, using ultraperipheral collisions of Pb nuclei at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of s NN= 5.02 TeV. This rapidity interval corresponds to a Bjorken-x range (0.3–1.4)× 10− 3. Cross sections are given in five| t| intervals in the range 0.04<| t|< 1 GeV 2 and compared to the predictions by different models. Models that ignore quantum fluctuations of the gluon density in the colliding hadron predict a| t| dependence of the cross section much steeper than in data. The inclusion of such fluctuations in the same models provides a better description of the data.

Skewness and kurtosis of mean transverse momentum fluctuations at the LHC energies

The first measurements of skewness and kurtosis of mean transverse momentum (< p T>) fluctuations are reported in Pb–Pb collisions at s NN= 5.02 TeV, Xe–Xe collisions at s NN= 5.44 TeV and pp collisions at s= 5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector. The measurements are carried out as a function of system size< d N ch/d η>| η|< 0.5 1/3, using charged particles with transverse momentum (p T) and pseudorapidity (η), in the range 0.2< p T< 3.0 GeV/c and| η|< 0.8, respectively. Measurement of the radius dependence of charged-particle jet suppression in Pb–Pb collisions at sNN= 5.02 TeV

The ALICE Collaboration reports a differential measurement of inclusive jet suppression using pp and Pb–Pb collision data at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon collision s NN= 5.02 TeV. Charged-particle jets are reconstructed using the anti-k T algorithm with resolution parameters R= 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6 in pp collisions and R= 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 in central (0–10%), semi-central (30–50%), and peripheral (60–80%) Pb–Pb collisions. A novel approach based on machine learning is employed to mitigate the influence of jet background. Measurement of the fraction of jet longitudinal momentum carried by baryons in collisions

Recent measurements of charm-baryon production in hadronic collisions have questioned the universality of charm-quark fragmentation across different collision systems. In this work the fragmentation of charm quarks into charm baryons is probed, by presenting the first measurement of the longitudinal jet momentum fraction carried by Λ c+ baryons, z∥ ch, in hadronic collisions. Systematic study of flow vector decorrelation in TeV Pb-Pb collisions

Measurements of the -dependent flow vector fluctuations in Pb-Pb collisions at using azimuthal correlations with the ALICE experiment at the LHC are presented. A four-particle correlation approach [1] is used to quantify the effects of flow angle and magnitude fluctuations separately. This paper extends previous studies to additional centrality intervals and provides measurements of the -dependent flow vector fluctuations at with two-particle correlations. Significant -dependent fluctuations of the flow vector in Pb-Pb collisions are found across different centrality ranges, with the largest fluctuations of up to 15% being present in the 5% most central collisions. In parallel, no evidence of significant -dependent fluctuations of or is found. Additionally, evidence of flow angle and magnitude fluctuations is observed with more than significance in central collisions. These observations in Pb-Pb collisions indicate where the classical picture of hydrodynamic modeling with a common symmetry plane breaks down. This has implications for hard probes at high , which might be biased by -dependent flow angle fluctuations of at least 23% in central collisions. Given the presented results, existing theoretical models should be re-examined to improve our understanding of initial conditions, quark--gluon plasma (QGP) properties, and the dynamic evolution of the created system.

Investigating the nature of the K state with K correlations at the LHC

The first measurements of femtoscopic correlations with the particle pair combinations K in pp collisions at TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are reported by the ALICE experiment. Using the femtoscopic approach, it is shown that it is possible to study the elusive K particle that has been considered a tetraquark candidate for over forty years. Boson source parameters and final-state interaction parameters are extracted by fitting a model assuming a Gaussian source to the experimentally measured two-particle correlation functions. The final-state interaction is modeled through a resonant scattering amplitude, defined in terms of a mass and a coupling parameter, decaying into a K pair. The extracted mass and Breit-Wigner width, derived from the coupling parameter, of the final-state interaction are found to be consistent with previous measurements of the K. The small value and increasing behavior of the correlation strength with increasing source size support the hypothesis that the K is a four-quark state, i.e. a tetraquark state. This latter trend is also confirmed via a simple geometric model that assumes a tetraquark structure of the K resonance.

Measurement of the low-energy antitriton inelastic cross section

In this Letter, the first measurement of the inelastic cross section for antitriton–nucleus interactions is reported, covering the momentum range of 0.8≤ p< 2.4 GeV/c. resonance production in Pb-Pb collisions at TeV

The production of K*(892)±meson resonance is measured at midrapidity (| y|< 0.5) in Pb− Pb collisions at s N N= 5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The resonance is reconstructed via its hadronic decay channel K*(892)±→ K S 0 π±. The transverse momentum distributions are obtained for various centrality intervals in the p T range of 0.4− 16 GeV/c. Longitudinal and transverse spin transfer to and hyperons in polarized collisions at

The longitudinal and transverse spin transfers to Λ (Λ) hyperons in polarized proton-proton collisions are expected to be sensitive to the helicity and transversity distributions, respectively, of (anti) strange quarks in the proton, and to the corresponding polarized fragmentation functions. We report improved measurements of the longitudinal spin transfer coefficient, D L L, and the transverse spin transfer coefficient, D T T, to Λ and Λin polarized proton-proton collisions at s= 200 GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The dataset includes longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions with an integrated luminosity of 52 pb− 1, and transversely polarized proton-proton collisions with a similar integrated luminosity. Exclusive four pion photoproduction in ultraperipheral Pb-Pb collisions at TeV

The intense photon fluxes from relativistic nuclei provide an opportunity to study photonuclear interactions in ultraperipheral collisions. The measurement of coherently photoproduced final states in ultraperipheral Pb-Pb collisions at TeV is presented for the first time. The cross section, d/d, times the branching ratio () is found to be mb in the rapidity interval . The invariant mass distribution is not well described with a single Breit-Wigner resonance. The production of two interfering resonances, and , provides a good description of the data. The values of the masses () and widths () of the resonances extracted from the fit are MeV/, MeV/, MeV/ and MeV/, respectively. The measured cross sections times the branching ratios are compared to recent theoretical predictions.

Differential cross-section measurements of the production of four charged leptons in association with two jets using the ATLAS detector

Differential cross-sections are measured for the production of four charged leptons in association with two jets. These measurements are sensitive to final states in which the jets are produced via the strong interaction as well as to the purely-electroweak vector boson scattering process. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by ATLAS at= 13 TeV and with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb− 1. The data are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution and are compared to state-of-the-art Monte Carlo event generator predictions. The differential cross-sections are used to search for anomalous weak-boson self-interactions that are induced by dimension-six and dimension-eight operators in Standard Model effective field theory.

Studies of new Higgs boson interactions through nonresonant HH production in the final state in pp collisions at = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for nonresonant Higgs boson pair production in the final state is performed using 140 fb− 1 of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. This analysis supersedes and expands upon the previous nonresonant ATLAS results in this final state based on the same data sample. The analysis strategy is optimised to probe anomalous values not only of the Higgs (H) boson self-coupling modifier κ λ but also of the quartic HHVV (V= W, Z) coupling modifier κ 2V. No significant excess above the expected background from Standard Model processes is observed. An observed upper limit μ HH< 4.0 is set at 95% confidence level on the Higgs boson pair production cross-section normalised to its Standard Model prediction. The 95% confidence intervals for the coupling modifiers are− 1.4< κ λ< 6.9 and− 0.5< κ 2V< 2.7, assuming …

Search for pair production of squarks or gluinos decaying via sleptons or weak bosons in final states with two same-sign or three leptons with the ATLAS detector

A search for pair production of squarks or gluinos decaying via sleptons or weak bosons is reported. The search targets a final state with exactly two leptons with same-sign electric charge or at least three leptons without any charge requirement. The analysed data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb− 1 of proton-proton collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Multiple signal regions are defined, targeting several SUSY simplified models yielding the desired final states. A single control region is used to constrain the normalisation of the WZ+ jets background. No significant excess of events over the Standard Model expectation is observed. The results are interpreted in the context of several supersymmetric models featuring R-parity conservation or R-parity violation, yielding exclusion limits surpassing those from previous searches. Inclusive and differential cross-sections for the production of top quarks in association with a photon are measured with proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb− 1. The data were collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC during Run 2 between 2015 and 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The measurements are performed in a fiducial volume defined at parton level. Events with exactly one photon, one electron and one muon of opposite sign, and at least two jets, of which at least one is b-tagged, are selected. The fiducial cross-section is measured to be fb. Baryonic dark forces in electron-beam fixed-target experiments

New GeV-scale dark forces coupling predominantly to quarks offer novel signatures that can be produced directly and searched for at high-luminosity colliders. We compute the photon-proton and electron-proton cross sections for producing a GeV-scale gauge boson arising from a U (1) B gauge symmetry. Our calculation relies on vector meson dominance and a phenomenological model for diffractive scattering used for vector-meson photoproduction. The parameters of our phenomenological model are fixed by performing a Markov Chain Monte Carlo fit to existing exclusive photoproduction data for ω and ϕ mesons. Our approach can be generalized to other GeV-scale dark gauge forces.

Charged-particle production as a function of the relative transverse activity classifier in pp, p–Pb, and Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC

Measurements of charged-particle production in pp, p–Pb, and Pb–Pb collisions in the toward, away, and transverse regions with the ALICE detector are discussed. These regions are defined event-by-event relative to the azimuthal direction of the charged trigger particle, which is the reconstructed particle with the largest transverse momentum in the range 8<< 15 GeV/c. The toward and away regions contain the primary and recoil jets, respectively; both regions are accompanied by the underlying event (UE). In contrast, the transverse region perpendicular to the direction of the trigger particle is dominated by the so-called UE dynamics, and includes also contributions from initial-and final-state radiation. Equivariant localization for AdS/CFT

We explain how equivariant localization may be applied to AdS/CFT to compute various BPS observables in gravity, such as central charges and conformal dimensions of chiral primary operators, without solving the supergravity equations. The key ingredient is that supersymmetric AdS solutions with an R-symmetry are equipped with a set of equivariantly closed forms. These may in turn be used to impose flux quantization and compute observables for supergravity solutions, using only topological information and the Berline-Vergne-Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula. We illustrate the formalism by considering AdS 5× M 6 and AdS 3× M 8 solutions of D= 11 supergravity. As well as recovering results for many classes of well-known supergravity solutions, without using any knowledge of their explicit form, we also compute central charges for which explicit supergravity solutions have not been constructed.

Differential cross-section measurements of the production of four charged leptons in association with two jets using the ATLAS detector

Differential cross-sections are measured for the production of four charged leptons in association with two jets. These measurements are sensitive to final states in which the jets are produced via the strong interaction as well as to the purely-electroweak vector boson scattering process. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by ATLAS at= 13 TeV and with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb− 1. The data are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution and are compared to state-of-the-art Monte Carlo event generator predictions. The differential cross-sections are used to search for anomalous weak-boson self-interactions that are induced by dimension-six and dimension-eight operators in Standard Model effective field theory.

Studies of new Higgs boson interactions through nonresonant HH production in the final state in pp collisions at = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for nonresonant Higgs boson pair production in the final state is performed using 140 fb− 1 of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. This analysis supersedes and expands upon the previous nonresonant ATLAS results in this final state based on the same data sample. The analysis strategy is optimised to probe anomalous values not only of the Higgs (H) boson self-coupling modifier κ λ but also of the quartic HHVV (V= W, Z) coupling modifier κ 2V. No significant excess above the expected background from Standard Model processes is observed. An observed upper limit μ HH< 4.0 is set at 95% confidence level on the Higgs boson pair production cross-section normalised to its Standard Model prediction. The 95% confidence intervals for the coupling modifiers are− 1.4< κ λ< 6.9 and− 0.5< κ 2V< 2.7, assuming …

Spectral flow of vortex shape modes over the BPS 2-vortex moduli space

The flow of shape eigenmodes of the small fluctuation operator around BPS 2-vortex solutions is calculated, as a function of the intervortex separation 2d. For the rotationally-invariant 2-vortex, with d= 0, there are three discrete modes; the lowest is non-degenerate and the upper two are degenerate. As d increases, the degeneracy splits, with one eigenvalue increasing and entering the continuous spectrum, and the other decreasing and asymptotically coalescing with the lowest eigenvalue, where they jointly become the eigenvalue of the 1-vortex radial shape mode. The behaviour of the eigenvalues near d= 0 is clarified using a perturbative analysis, and also in light of the 2-vortex moduli space geometry.
